You’re about to spend $150–500 on a building set from a brand you’ve never heard of, and the box won’t carry a name you recognise. It’s a fair thing to hesitate over. This page is the honest answer — what the bricks are, where they come from, what’s identical to the set you’re comparing against, and what genuinely isn’t.
The short version
- Same material as the brand-name sets — ABS plastic, moulded to the same 8 mm stud spacing
- They clutch, stack and mix with bricks you already own
- We buy from one manufacturer we settled on, not whoever is cheapest that month
- Missing a piece? We send replacements free, no argument
- We cap our own price at 65% of the popular brand’s Canadian retail — if we can’t beat them clearly, we don’t list it
What you’re actually buying
NuvoBlox sells compatible building sets. They are not made by the popular brand you’re comparing them against, and we don’t pretend otherwise. What they are is the same construction system — the stud-and-tube design that went off-patent decades ago — manufactured by a different company.
That distinction matters less than most people expect, because the thing that makes a brick good is not the logo on the stud. It’s three measurable things: the plastic it’s moulded from, the tolerance it’s moulded to, and how consistent the colour is batch to batch.
The plastic
Our sets are moulded in ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) — the same family of thermoplastic the premium brand uses for standard bricks. It’s what gives a brick its slight give when you press it home, its resistance to snapping under stress, and its ability to hold a sharp edge on a corner. It’s also why a brick from 1985 still clutches: ABS doesn’t go brittle the way cheaper polystyrene and PP do.
Sets that skimp use PS or unfilled PP instead. You can usually hear the difference before you see it — cheap bricks click hollow and thin, and they scuff white at the corners when you separate them. If you’ve ever bought a bargain-bin brick set and been disappointed, that’s almost always what happened.
The tolerance
Studs sit on an 8 mm grid, a standard brick is 9.6 mm tall, and the whole system only works if every part holds those numbers to within a few hundredths of a millimetre. Get it wrong on the loose side and the model sags apart. Wrong on the tight side and you’ll be reaching for a brick separator on every third piece — and stressing the parts every time you do.
This is the single biggest quality difference between compatible-brick manufacturers, and it’s the reason we don’t shop around on price.
Why we buy from one manufacturer
Most stores selling compatible sets are order-forwarders. A customer buys, they place an order with whichever factory listed that model cheapest this week, and it ships. Nobody at the store has handled the product, and the factory can change between your order and your neighbour’s — which is exactly why reviews for those stores swing between “brilliant” and “rubbish” for the same item.
We picked a manufacturer and stayed with it. That’s a less dramatic promise than “we inspect every set,” and we’d rather tell you the accurate one: we’re not opening and checking each box individually. What we do is buy from a known source rather than an anonymous cheapest-bidder, so the set you receive is the same set the last customer received.
Any piece missing or malformed, email us and replacements go out free — you don’t need to return anything or send photographic evidence. On a 5,000-piece set, the occasional short count is a fact of life in this industry. Ours is on us to fix.

Honest comparison
If we only listed the good parts you’d rightly discount all of it. Here’s both columns.
| What that means for you | |
|---|---|
| ✅ Same brick system | Mixes with bricks you already own. Same 8 mm stud grid, same clutch. |
| ✅ Same material | ABS plastic. Holds clutch, resists snapping, doesn’t scuff white at the corners. |
| ✅ Same piece count and model | We verify the count and the finished dimensions against the original set before listing. The model you build is the model you’re looking at. |
| ✅ Full printed elements | Printed tiles and detail parts, not stickers-for-everything. |
| ⚠️ No brand logo on the studs | The studs are blank. If a logo on top of every stud matters to you, buy the original — genuinely. |
| ⚠️ Ships without the retail box | Bagged parts and the manual in protective packaging. Cheaper to ship, far less likely to arrive crushed — but there’s no display box for a shelf. |
| ⚠️ Paper instruction manual | Complete step-by-step, but printed plainly — not the glossy bound booklet. |
| ⚠️ Occasional colour variance | Across manufacturing batches a grey can land a shade off. Rare, and usually invisible on a finished model — but it happens. |
| ⚠️ Not an official licensed product | No affiliation with the popular brand or any franchise. If you’re buying as a sealed investment piece, this isn’t that. |
Why it costs so much less
There’s no trick here, and it isn’t cheaper plastic. The price difference is licensing and brand: a large branded set carries a franchise licence, a marketing budget and a retail margin, and you pay for all three. Ours carries none of them.
We hold ourselves to a hard rule: a NuvoBlox set is never priced above 65% of the same set’s Canadian retail price. If the maths doesn’t get us clearly under that, we don’t list the set at all. You should be able to look up the original and see the gap immediately — please do.
Questions we get asked
Will these actually clutch with my existing bricks?
Yes. Same stud spacing, same tube geometry. Mix them freely.
Are the pieces safe for kids?
ABS is the same material used across the mainstream brick industry. Age guidance is listed on every product page — most of our large display sets are 18+ for build complexity, not for safety.
What if a piece is missing?
Email us with the set and the part. Replacements are free and we don’t ask you to return anything.
Do I get instructions?
Yes — a complete printed step-by-step manual in every set.
Why is there no box?
Shipping a large empty box across an ocean costs real money and arrives dented. We ship the parts and the manual properly protected, and pass the saving on.
Where does it ship from?
Canada, with free shipping on every order. Delivery estimates are shown per product.
If you’ve read this far, you’re the kind of buyer we’d rather have. Look at the sets, compare a price against the original, and decide with the facts in front of you.
